Some things to consider.

So finally made it in to medicine and it feels great... the first few months have turned my world upside down. So I guess ill start with explaining how the GEMP program is laid out... GEMP1/year 3 and GEMP2/year 4 are essentualy one year consisting of 11 blocks (a block is generaly a system of the body this is true for all 9 blocks except for the first 2) after this GEMP 3/year 5 and GEMP 4/ year 6 is mostly clinical where more time is spent in the hospital. In terms of test these are normaly a multiple choice question papers and short answer questions. I got my leter of acceptance on the 21st of december, the date does change each year but its usualy around this time. If you are considering the route I decided to take, I think its important that you consider accomadation and all the other important things involved with starting at a new university as it does become quite rushed, medical school usualy opens around the 5th of January. The next thing is your final results, if you are currently studying, often these become a slight issue at the end as wits request an official copy with the universities stamp, these can be difficult to obtain by the date that wits requires it but normaly the people involved are understanding and will help you out. The next post will cover the first block.

  2. Hi Richard.

Hope the rest of the year has gone well with the studies.

Going back to the time between the WAPT and the letter of acceptance. Did you have correspondence with the university during that period? Notification of exams passed, soft acceptance and all that thrilling stuff?

  3. Hi Ryan

I am sorry this took so long, the only correspondence you receive is whether you pass the WAPT or not, they don't release the actual marks...I received the info about the results of the test in about end of October/beginning of November. after the results came out given you pass(which i'm sure you have) then its a long wait till around December, when you get the final decision, the dates change every year so this is just a rough idea. given the strike by students this year it is possible that the dates will be different as they have to wait for all the marks of students that are still in their final year.

best of luck, don't hesitate to ask questions.
    Richard

  4. Hello Richard!

I hope that you still check this blog *fingerscrossed*

I would just like to ask what your studying strategy looked like while you were prepping for the WAPT?

  5. Hi Eunice
I had quite a few friends that wrote the WAPT with me and it seems the best way is to use the learning objectives to see where you should focus ,I would start at least a month or two in advance and make sure you can answer most of the objectives... depending on your medical background will determine how much time you are going to have to study... The Wapt seems impossible at first but just work hard and using the objectives will make sure you learning the relevant stuff... having some people apply with you helps when you have no idea whats going on with some of the work...i hope this answers your question... best of luck and feel free to ask questions

  6. Hi Richard

If you don't mind me asking, around how much was your average for your 2nd and 3rd years respectively just to give me an idea of the marks they accept.
you can give me a range should you not want to disclose the actual marks.

    Thanks!
