  1. Hey congrats on makingetting it into 3rd year medicine
    Keep up the blog

I'm currently a pharmacist intern intending to do community serve next year
I'd considered doing med in 2017.
I've spoken to some people and theyve recommended I don't go into 3rd year and start at 1st year instead as I'll get a better foundation in anatomy and physiology and thus be more competent in future years.
What's your opinion on this based on your experience so far and those around you?

    1. Hi Zaheer, I would recommend that you try both options as seats are so limited in medicine at the moment in South Africa. Since you've done pharmacology, I assume your first year subjects are essentially similar to those in first year med. in second year they focus more on anatomy, physiology and molecular medicine...the gemp course makes provision for those who have not done these subjects and offers to fill in the gaps, although a lot will be self study. Wits is the only university in SA that offers the GEMP program and so if you apply to all the other universities which i would recommend, you are essentially applying for first year. I would also try applying for GEMP in addition to those. The people you've spoken to are correct in saying that you will get a better foundation but this can be obtained with hard work and self study as well, there are about +-70 gemp entrants and most of them have come from totally unrelated backgrounds, they seem to be coping quite well despite little knowledge in those subjects... the WAPT is set to make sure you know enough to cope so try all the options...

I hope I have answered your question
Good luck...feel free to ask more question
